Looe Key

Looe Key offers access to the Looe Key national marine sanctuary, where divers from novice through to experienced can enjoy scuba diving among 7000 years worth of coral. The HMS Looe sank in 1744 and is now an artificial reef. Around the Looe Key there are so many dive sites, in water from very shallow to deep.

When diving there is sand patches that are located near a coral reef nursery inhabited by juvenile fish and new growing corals. There are also areas of green conch. This is part of the Looe Key national marine sanctuary and it is important not to disturb or step on parts of the coral reef.

Located five miles south of Big Pine Key, Looe Key offers exclusive accommodation for divers. Looe Key resort is the starting place for a diving holiday of a lifetime. When taking the Looe Key snorkeling tour, equipment that fits and is in good repair is important. To find a proper fitting mask, place the mask over nose and mouth and breath in. If the mask stays in place without the bank or being held with a hand, then the seal is good and the mask fits. When snorkeling over Looe Key reef, the mask that fits will make a lot of difference to the days fun. Keeping the equipment clean requires rinsing after use. Wash with warm water and a little bit of detergent.

Charter trips to the scuba and snorkeling sites will be under the direction of a competent skipper. Always regard the skipper’s warnings and never dive or snorkel alone. Safety is always important when diving.

The Looe Key reef resort and dive center is at Mile Marker 27.5 on Ramrod Key. This dive center has been operating since the seventies and can guarantee a competent and informative dive experience. After diving with Looe Key dive center or Looe Key Reef resort dive instructors, relax and enjoy a cool drink in the nearby Bar.

Regarded by many to b e the most spectacular reef in the lower keys, Looe Key is a must for any serious diver to visit at least once in a lifetime. What Looe Key lacks in size it makes up for in spectacular formations, including a cave in 12 feet of water, massive star coral and samples of Elkhorn coral and tall coral formations.
